8 Home Maintenance Tips For Fall | Nashville Christian Family Magazine September 2023 issue - free Christian magazine

Hope all are settled back-to-school and back-to-routine after what felt like a long summer here in Nashville!  I am looking forward to fall and enjoying the cooler weather, beautiful color, and football season.

On the home front, the change in seasons is always a great time to do a house check and spend a weekend doing fall home maintenance.  See my checklist below for some helpful hints to get started.

September marks the beginning of our fall real estate market, which is an excellent time to sell and buy here in Nashville, as our market stays strong from September through November.  If you are considering a move, I would love to connect and talk about all things real estate.

Fall Maintenance Checklist

  1. Clean Gutters and Downspouts         Now is the perfect time to make sure your gutters and downspouts are free of leaves and debris.  Check now, and again once all the leaves have fallen from around your home.
  2. Seal Windows and Doors       Before the cold weather sets in, check your windows for gaps and seal with caulk.  Check the doors for worn or damaged weather stripping and replace as needed.
  3. Service Heating Systems        Get a head start on winter by servicing your heat unit.  A qualified HVAC contractor can clean the unit and check for any issues before a problem comes up.  And while you are thinking about it, change all air filters.
  4. Test Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors  The change of seasons is a great time to check your detectors.  Change all batteries and replace any detectors that are more than 10 years old.
  5. Lawn and Garden Clean-Up   Cut back any overgrown plants that have taken over during the growing season and remove any dead plants or shrubs.  Look your trees over and trim any damaged or dead limbs.  Fall is a great time to prepare your lawn for spring by overseeding.  And don’t forget, it is also a great time to plant trees and shrubs, so plan now for any additions or improvements you want to make to your landscape.
  6. Inspect and Clean Fireplaces Before you need your fireplace this fall, get a professional to come clean and inspect.  Once cold weather sets in, these businesses get busy, so schedule this early.
  7. Clean and Seal Wooden Decks          Is your deck looking green or worn?  Fall is a great time to pressure wash decks and apply a sealer to protect the wood in the seasons ahead.  Also, take the time to replace any wood that is beyond repair.
  8. Organize and Store Summer Gear     Now that the hottest part of year is over and kids are back to school, clean and store all that extra summer gear that may be in your garage or yard.  Throw away or donate any items that are broken or not needed.  Clean, organize, and store the rest so you will be ready for next summer.
